Virtual Storm Drain Art Workshop

Tuesday, April 5 • 6:00 pm7:00 pm

Blue Water Baltimore is excited to announce that we have redesigned and repurposed our Storm Drain Adoption Program. The biggest change is that we will no longer be supporting the stenciling of storm drains with spray paint. After running this program for many years, we found that maintenance of the painted drains has proven impossible to track. More often than not, the paint chips off and washes into the drain, which runs counter to our mission of keeping Baltimore’s pipes and waterways clean and healthy.

We are now advocating for “adopting” & creating chalk art for your local storm drains. When you attend our seasonal public workshop, you will learn what responsibilities that come with adopting your neighborhood storm drains as well as some techniques for decorating them. You can still apply to paint storm drains in Baltimore City, but you’ll first need to attend one of our storm drain adoption workshops, after which you’ll be able to submit your project application via Blue Water Baltimore. Public workshop attendees who apply to DPW will need to create their own stencils as Blue Water Baltimore no longer offers stencil kit rentals.

Chalk art is ephemeral, everchanging, and non-toxic — just like water! You’re art a gift to the next rainfall which will take it and leave you with a clean canvas to decorate again. When you regularly take up the practice of chalking up your storm drain with art and messaging, you’re giving your community a gift of new messages and new drawings in new vibrant colors.
