Wild Propagation at Chesapeake Natives: Volunteer Opportunity!

Wild Propagation at Chesapeake Natives: Volunteer Opportunity!

When you look at a tray of perennials from Chesapeake Natives Inc. each plant is slightly different—an exquisite example of nature’s diversity. Most plant nurseries produce plants from cuttings, growing plants that are genetically identical. However, at Chesapeake Natives, volunteers grow native local ecotypes from seed foraged in Maryland forests. Seed propagation is essential in preserving biodiversity among plant life. That’s why we think Chesapeake Natives is so important. Seed-grown plants develop and change with their environment, the way that nature intended.

Located in Rosaryville State Park, in Upper Marlboro Maryland, Chesapeake Natives Inc. produces and grows some 20,000 plants, covering about 150 species of perennial herbs, shrubs, and trees. The Mission of Chesapeake Natives, Inc. is to promote, protect, and propagate plants native to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

“A cornerstone of our mission is to promote the use of local ecotype native plants, the plants that belong in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, around our homes, in our schools, and in our residential parks and gardens.”

In the spring we will sell plants from Chesapeake Natives at Herring Run Nursery.

We invite you to volunteer this February with Herring Run Nursery at Chesapeake Natives! We will take a team of volunteers twice a week out to Chesapeake Natives to work in the historic Mt. Airy Mansion Greenhouse. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn about native plant propagation while transplanting native seedlings into plug trays. We are particularly interested in volunteers who can commit to more than one day or work, but anyone is welcome. Click the link bellow to sign up.
