Stuck at Home? Design a Reusable Bag!
In anticipation of Baltimore’s plastic bag ban, we’re partnering with the Office of Sustainability on a design contest for reusable bags to give out to city residents.
Earlier in January, before we fell into the grips of a global pandemic, Baltimore City passed a plastic bag ban to protect our streets and streams from this source of single-use plastic pollution. The bag ban will go into effect in January 2021. In preparation for the new law, Blue Water Baltimore is partnering with the Baltimore Office of Sustainability, Environment Maryland, and other organizations to ensure that residents have all of the information and tools they need before this ban goes into effect.
A key component of preparing for the plastic bag ban is ensuring that residents have access to reusable shopping bags. This is particularly important because there will be a five cent fee charged for paper bags once the law goes into effect.
In partnership with the Office of Sustainability, we are going to distribute free reusable bags to retailers and residents and publicize information about the bag ban over the next year.
How can I get involved?
We need YOU to help us spread the word and engage Baltimoreans in conversations and actions around reusable bags. We invite you to submit creative artwork and/or a catchy slogan to be printed on reusable bags that will be distributed across the city throughout 2020. Members of the public will vote to select the winning design.
Here are the submission guidelines:
- Must be a Baltimore City resident
- No age restrictions — students are encouraged to apply!
- Original artwork ONLY
- Up to two (2) colors per design
- Design can be in any medium, but must be easily printable
- No offensive language or symbols
- JPG, .PDF, or PNG files ONLY
- Design file must be at least 300 dpi
- Maximum dimensions: 11” wide & 12” high
- To submit an image and/or slogan, complete this Google Form by April 15th.

While these are uncertain and scary times, we can still find ways to contribute to a more sustainable Baltimore. Submit a design by April 15th, and you could see your artwork and/or slogan on reusable bags around the city! And if you’re looking for opportunities to directly support your community through this pandemic (or if you need support!), consider joining your local neighborhood response team.
